Best Workbenches For Woodworking & Garage (2020 Version)

We have been paying close attention to the best workbenches on the market for years now. Recently, we dialed in our research in order to identify the five most distinguished benches that are currently for sale.

In our research, we found that the Swivel 12-drawer sixty-inch workbench was the best overall option due to its sturdy design and user-friendly features. For the shopper looking to save money and still get a high-quality bench, we found the HomCom workbench to be the best option.

The other three benches on this list are just all-around great options, each designed to suit the needs of different types of users.

5 Best Workbenches – Review

1. Swivel 12-Drawer 60-Inch Rolling Workbench

Swivel 12-Drawer 60-Inch Rolling Workbench

The first workbench that we will be looking at is sturdy, massive, and jam-packed with storage potential—forthese reasons, and more, we have selected it as our top choice for the best workbench on this list. It’s definitely a deluxe unit with a price to match, but for those who don’t mind spending the money, the Swivel is a great buying opportunity. Let’s take a closer look.

Low-Resistance Drawers

The drawers on this unit do not feature any bearings or slides that are subject to wearing out over time. This feature works in its favor two-fold. First, it makes the workbench a lot less vulnerable to wear and tear by eliminating a point of vulnerability. It makes sense, right? Bearings and slides eventually wear out, and when they do it has a negative effect on the way whatever they were mounted to used to function. The fact that this bench does not have them extends both the life of the drawers, and of the piece of equipment as a whole.

It also makes opening and shutting these drawers a breeze. It might seem like a relatively mild point in these drawers’ favor, but it’s actually a really important feature—with the way these drawers are designed, you should never have any trouble opening or closing them with one hand, which will save you a lot of frustration if you are trying to get things done while carrying heavy equipment.

Well-Built

Quality does not come cheap, and that is certainly true of this workbench—the build of this unit is what you are ultimately paying for. The entire body of this unit is of fully welded- all-steel construction to ensure that this workbench is as durable as possible.

Pieces of equipment like this are going to endure a lot of wear and tear, so quality construction is a must if you want something that is going to last—and that is exactly what you are getting here.

The Swivel is over six hundred pounds of steel spread out over a large frame that will give you plenty of well-constructed space to work on—truly, there isn’t much more you can want out of a workbench.

It’s Massive

Now, if you don’t have a lot of space in your shop or garage, a massive workbench is not necessarily a good thing—in fact, the size of this piece of equipment may very well eliminate it as a buying option for you.

However, if space is not an issue, you are going to love the ample space that the table top provides you to work on, as well as the more than ample storage offered by the twelve heavy-duty drawers featured on this unit.
What’s the downside to all of this? These great features don’t come cheap. This is high-end quality, and unfortunately, it comes with a high-end price tag as well. The cost of this workbench may eliminate it as a buying opportunity for many shoppers.

What we liked:

  • Well-built
  • Great drawers
  • Tons of storage

What we didn’t like:

  • Expensive

2. HomCom Tool Cabinet

HomCom Tool Cabinet

On the opposite end of the price spectrum is the HomCom—a budget-friendly option that will still provide potential users with a sturdy frame and a decent amount of storage and work space.
The HomCom isn’t nearly as large as the last unit that we looked at, but it is well-made and very affordable, which is why we have made it our top pick for people who are looking for a budget-friendly workbench.

Back Wall

While you aren’t getting nearly as much storage with this unit as you would get with the last one that we looked at, the HomCom supplements its draw space by including a back wall that you can use to hang tools and other necessary pieces of equipment.

It also includes five large and two smaller drawers, so you aren’t exactly hurting for storage options with this tool cabinet.

Lock and Key

The HomCom is fully lockable, which is a great thing for a few reasons. For one, you certainly want to keep your tools and equipment safe, and the ability to lock all seven drawers will certainly help to accomplish that.
Besides protecting you from theft, however, the ability to lock your workbench will also help to keep your family safe. If you have children in your house, you probably agree that having them share a space with power tools can be a little bit unnerving—the lock and key will help take some of this stress out of the situation.

Solid Steel

Don’t let the price tag fool you, you’re still getting a very soundly built piece of equipment with this tool. I’ll mention once again that a sturdy frame can really make or break the quality of a workbench—the fact that this tool is both affordable and made of solid steel is exactly what makes it such a great bargain opportunity. You don’t need to break your bank to get a workbench that is made to last.

One thing you might notice on this bench is that the table is somewhat low, which means you may have to stoop a little bit to use it. This can make long hours spent tinkering a little bit uncomfortable.

What we liked:

  • Secure
  • Back wall storage
  • Solid steel

What we didn’t like:

  • Work table alittle low

3. Multipurpose Workbench

Multipurpose Workbench

This next unit is attractive, affordable, and it benefits from a few unique features that most potential buyers are sure to appreciate. Let’s take a closer look to see how it suits your needs.

Lights

Though not a necessary feature, the lights that come attached to this unit are a really nice,user-friendly perk. Shops are not necessarily known for their lighting, so a bit of extra brightness can go a long way towards enhancing the quality of your work. There is no wiring required either—to utilize the lights, you only need to plug them into a wall outlet.

Comfortable Height

The height of this piece of equipment has been optimized to ensure that the work table is at the ideal level when you are sitting or standing. The benefits of this feature are pretty self-explanatory. The longer you work, the more strain it is ultimately going to end up putting on your back and neck—it’s nice that this workbench is designed to offset that discomfort.

The Fixins

Despite this unit falling on the lower end of the price spectrum, it still includes everything that you would expect to find on a workbench. Like the last workbench that we looked at, this unit also features a pegboard that will provide you with additional storage that you can use to hang anything from hammers to power tools.

This workbench also features two drawers built into its all-steel frame that you will be able to keep tools and other supplies in. A few extra drawers would be nice, but two is still better than nothing, and many shoppers will find that they are willing to give up a few drawers to get a workbench for as great a deal as we are seeing with this unit.

What we liked:

  • Lights
  • Comfortable height
  • Pegboard

What we didn’t like:

  • Could benefit from additional storage

4. Windsor Designs Workbench

Windsor Designs Workbench

The second to last bench that we will be looking at is fairly basic, but in the best possible way—it is big, sturdy, and affordable, which should make it a great buying option for many shoppers. Let’s take a closer look.

Easy to Assemble

While many of the steel workbenches that we have looked at so far on this list come mostly assembled already (with the exception of attachable pegboard) this particular unit is going to require a little bit of handiwork before it is usable. Granted, if you are reading this you probably don’t have much of a problem with handiwork, but it can still be a bit of a drag to have to assemble something when all you want to do is try it out.

Fortunately, assembly with the Windsor is easy and straightforward, so if you read the instructions you should have your workbench up in no time.

Solid

Obviously, the fact that this is a wooden bench is going to mean that it functions a little bit differently than the steel alternatives that we have seen on this list. Wood can be something of a risk because quality can vary pretty significantly, but the good news is that you are getting really high-quality materials with this unit.

The top table and the bottom shelf are each capable of holding up to two hundred pounds of weight, which means that they shouldn’t have any trouble sustaining whatever tools and work pieces you are using.
The drawers are able to hold up to twenty-five pounds, which is still pretty good, though it may limit what you are able to put in them.

It is,however, worth mentioning that some users have found that this workbench struggles a little bit in hot or humid conditions. Since this is a wooden bench, it may swell or shrink depending on the weather conditions which can have an impact on the condition of the bench itself.

Spacious

Finally, you are getting plenty of room to work with this bench—the table is five feet long, which should give you enough room to work on a wide variety of projects.

What we liked:

  • Spacious
  • Solid
  • Easy to assemble

What we didn’t like:

  • Wood is vulnerable to certain weather conditions

5. Seville Classics Stainless Steel Workbench

Seville Classics Stainless Steel Workbench

The last workbench that we will be looking at features a solid stainless-steelframe that will serve as a sturdy surface to work from. Let’s one last time take a look at the features to see how they stack up with your needs.

Lights

As you have probably noticed, most of the workbenches that we have looked at do not feature built in lights. It’s a real shame as they are quite a handy feature to have, but nevertheless you are getting them with this unit which is a big plus.

Corrosion-Free

This product is built to last—the solid steel frame has been coated with a finish that is designed to prevent rust and corrosion, ensuring that you will be able to enjoy your workbench for many years to come.
Pegboard

Unfortunately, this unit does not have a lot of storage, so the pegboard really comes in handy here. There are plenty of hooks that you can use to hang tools of various sizes, which is going to offset the fact that this bench comes with only one drawer.

What we liked:

  • Lights
  • Anti-corrosion coating
  • Pegboard

What we didn’t like:

  • Only one shelf

Conclusion:

Which of these awesome workbenches is right for you? It’s going to depend on your needs and your situation. Do you want as much space as you can get? Is quality king? Is price no object? In this case, you might want to seriously consider investing in the Swivel.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a more compact unit, or even simply a more affordable option, the HomCom, or really any of the other workbenches that we looked at may be more up your alley.

Just remember that for many people the workbench is at the center of their shop—take your time, and pick a piece of equipment that you love.

I purchased 5 of these benches.

I purchased 5 of these benches. I found two them at my local store originally then drove to purchase the others. I have had them for almost 2 years now and love them. I just wish I had space for more of them. The construction is excellent and I have had no problems whatsoever with the product. The paint is very durable and has not come off like a previous reviewer. Powder coat is an extremely durable paint. I have put heavy steel tools in the drawers. As well as tooling for my Bridgeport Mill and South Bend lathe. It can hold at least 150 lbs per drawer and opens with ease. I would purchase more of them without hesitation.

PRO603512 + Pro513009

Heavy duty steel workbench in front of big rig truck.

Ruff Bros trucking added a PRO513009 to a heavy duty steel 2in1 workbench toolbox combo and added much more space for nuts, bolts, washers and other items they needed. In this way, they can bring their workbench to the worksite and bring all their tools and parts which proved to be very efficient at saving time.

Ruff Bros, thanks for the picture.

One Man’s Experience

Went to an auction last week thinking I might be able to pick up some tools and possibly a tool box for the garage. As it turns out I didn’t bid on the box, so I’m still looking. Since most of us here are tool guys, we pretty much know what to expect with tool boxes, on the surface the construction looks pretty much the same, but the details make all of the difference, especially things like drawer slides. Cheap slides can really ruin a box, so, what if you eliminated the slide? How about putting the drawers on a swivel. That’s what happens with these 2 in 1 heavy duty workbenches from Swivel Storage Solutions.

The Penner family has a metal fabrication business located in Canada and after going through a lot of boxes, they decided to build their own. Instead of the usual chest full of drawers on slides, they designed drawers that rotate on a steel post, making it easy to swing it completely open so there’s nothing hiding in the back. The shape of the drawers also makes it easy to fit the box into a corner where a regular tool chest doesn’t work.

They make quite a variety in lots of different sizes. The 12, 14 or 16 gauge metal is powder coated and prices run from $1000 to $4000. I think they look pretty cool and seem like they would be plenty durable. I might have to look these guys up.

Actual Conversation with our customer

He bought a PRO25 from us 4 years ago. He is a very happy customer!

He used to buy the other brand names and with welding and using self-tapping screws, etc he could barely make those units last 1 season. Now he has had the PRO25 for 4 seasons and other then a bit of faded paint and a small dent the unit is still perfect. It sits on his truck all the time. They use the front Latch to pull the full unit of tools forward so they have to re-bend that latch every so often. But this unit bounces around on his truck all summer long and is still great! One time one worker had forgotten to close the tailgate and the unit went rolling down the road a bunch of times, but no dent. All they had to do was take out the tools so they could lift the unit back on the truck and re-load the tools and they were good to go. He says if we want some competitor advertising he can bring us some old Napa & Snap on Tool boxes that he has used for 6 months that have all kinds of welds on them. He says his PRO25 has been to hell and back at least 10 times and is still good as new.

Back then he thought $1400 was lots to pay for a unit, but after using it for 4 yrs he realized it was not a high price to pay.

Swivel Storage – How it all started.

The Evolution of the 2 in 1 Heavy Duty Workbench (PRO603512)

As machinists by trade, the Penner family went through toolboxes regardless of how much money they spent on them, the toolbox just would not last. The rollers and bearings would bind after mere months in an environment filled with metal filling dust and debris. They needed something better.

In the toolbox market, there has always been a need for heavy duty toolboxes and workbenches. All toolboxes have the flaw of roller bearings and sliders that wear out and fail over time. The problem with today’s workbenches is that they just are not built well enough to survive the heavy tools and dusty shop atmosphere. The Penners developed the swivel system to eliminate the rollers, bearings and slides. Swivel has redefined the heavy-duty toolbox.

Swivel starts with a 1” steel rod.  The drawer hinge system is the equivalent of a large church door. It is thousands of pounds and sits on 3 or 4 ½” hinges, yet for the last hundred of years that door has closed perfectly, and it latches with precision to its adjacent strike plate. The hinge system allows low resistance drawers that close properly every time with one hand. Dirt and dust will not affect the strong greaseable hinge, and it will never bind even when fully loaded.

Then we use 14 gauge drawers that are fully welded steel construction which makes it very durable. Manual welding was good, but the precision required to make the drawer fit was not as consistent as the brand needed, so Swivel storage started using automated robot welders to weld the frame and drawers with precision accuracy. The rod and drawers must fit with precision to ensure that the heavy duty workbench will work in all environments.

The drawers are powder coated and a steel handle is attached. A rare earth magnet is fastened to the rear of the drawer to secure the door in a closed state until the user opens it.

The drawers are then housed in an all steel 2”x2” frame. The frame allows rigidity for the toolbox, which allows for a 400lb capacity per drawer. This furthers the evolution into a workbench. The drawers are cleaned and an anti-skid mat is placed inside.

The steel frame is then wrapped in a 16 gauge skirt. Five inch vinyl greaseable casters are placed onto the frame and adjustable legs are inserted for uneven floors. So now you have a moveable tools storage system. Add a ¼” steel top with a backsplash and it revolutionizes the toolboxes into a 2 in 1 toolbox and workbench, a workbench that moves to where your project is. Because our leveling legs are on the outside of the casters, it creates a table-like sturdiness to the workbench – a workbench that allows you to take your tools with you. A patented foot lever system allows you to move the 2 in 1 toolbox and workbench easily to your project. Repetitive.

All this allows one of the strongest tool storage and workbench combination. You have probably heard how there is a toolbox out there that you can stand in, well, that’s us.

Once you add things like the optional dividers and push-pull handles, you have a complete work area that you can move anywhere in your shop.
